Historical Background and Application Examples
The earliest evidence of wind chimes dates from 3000 B.C. and was found at archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. By 2000 B.C., chimes had been developed independently along the shores of the Mediterranean and were being cast from bronze by the Egyptians.
Concept A: From these early times they were thought to repel evil demons and ghosts and attract benevolent spirits and became known as Ghost Catchers. In performance: The Performer rings them by hand to “clear and cleanse” the area of negative energy as well as to attract a friendly spirit. Suddenly, the chimes ring themselves announcing a benevolent spirit’s arrival.
Concept B: Other sources say that in ancient times, the chimes were used as warning signals immediately prior to events of uncontrollable forces. In performance: The chimes ring themselves just before another supernatural event occurs, such as an audience member feeling a ghostly touch (see Wraith).
